Our Story

The Morningside Farmers Market has its roots in a farmer cooperative that started with Cynthia Hizer's herb garden at the old Atlanta Waterworks in the late 1980's. In 1995 the Georgia Grown farmers were asked to bring extra produce for a market that would share with the public the same abundance they were offering the chefs. By the second week it was so successful the farmers wanted to start dong the selling themselves. Now, here we are thriteen years later, some of the same farmers and partners are still with us, proud to be serving the community with fresh, organic produce.

Organic

Produce must be certified organically grown to be sold at the Morningside Farmers Market.

Why Organic?

  • Multiple studies show 77% of conventional food carries synthetic pesticide residues
  • Organic production builds the health of the soil and doesn’t release synthetic pesticides into the environment.

Local

All vendors are "local" at the Morningside Farmers Market. The furthest farm (Cimino) travels two hours to attend market.

Why Local?

  • A study by the UM at Amherst found their state could grow 15-20% of its $4 billion in food imports, which would keep $1 billion circulating in the state’s economy.
  • Food travels an average of 1,500 from farm to plate
